Commercial Fence Installation in Memphis: What Businesses Need to Know

Fencing needs for commercial properties are different from residential ones. The priorities are usually security, durability, and coverage, often across larger perimeters and with more demanding site conditions than a backyard installation. 5 Ash Construction handles commercial fence installation across the Memphis metro, working with businesses, contractors, property managers, and developers. Here’s what to understand going into a commercial fencing project.

Chain Link for Commercial Properties

Chain link is the most common fencing type for commercial applications in Memphis, and for good reason. It’s durable, it covers ground efficiently, and it holds up to the kind of ongoing use and occasional impact that commercial sites see. For warehouses, storage facilities, equipment yards, industrial properties, and contractor lots, chain link is the practical baseline.

Commercial chain link typically uses a heavier gauge wire than residential installations. Where residential fencing might use 11 or 11.5 gauge, commercial applications commonly call for 9 gauge, which is noticeably heavier and more resistant to bending and cutting. Post sizing and spacing also follow more demanding standards, with larger diameter posts set deeper and closer together than residential fence posts.

Height requirements vary by application. A six-foot fence is common for standard commercial perimeters. Eight-foot and taller fences are used for higher-security applications or where deterring access is a primary concern.

Access Control and Gate Configurations

Gate setup is often more complex on commercial properties than residential ones. Businesses typically need gates sized for vehicle access, sometimes including large trucks or equipment. Sliding gates are common on commercial sites where a swing gate would require too much clear space. Double swing gates with drop rods, cantilever slide gates, and motorized gate operators are all options depending on the site layout and the level of access control needed.

Getting gate sizing and hardware right on a commercial installation is critical. An undersized gate operator or a gate that’s too heavy for its hardware becomes a maintenance problem quickly in a high-use environment.

Privacy and Security Fencing

Some commercial applications call for privacy or security fencing rather than open chain link. Storage facilities, properties with equipment or material they want to keep out of view, and businesses where the visual appearance of the perimeter matters all have reasons to look at solid fencing options.

Privacy slats in chain link are a cost-effective way to reduce sightlines without changing the basic fence structure. Solid vinyl or wood privacy fencing can also be used in commercial settings, though it’s more common for the visible street-facing portions of a property than for full perimeter enclosures.

Welded wire and specialty security fencing products are available for higher-security commercial applications where deterrence and access control are the primary goals.

Planning a Commercial Fence Project

Commercial fence installations require more upfront planning than a standard residential fence. Larger perimeters mean more posts, more material, and longer installation timelines. Access to the site for equipment, placement of gates relative to parking and traffic flow, and any local permitting requirements all need to be worked through before installation begins.

On larger commercial properties, we’ll typically do a site walk before putting together a quote. That gives us an accurate picture of the terrain, any obstacles along the fence line, and what the gate configurations need to look like. A quote built on a rough measurement from the street isn’t as useful as one based on an actual site assessment.
